Glover, Newsom, and Kingman, of course, were not living, but I was able to find and interview the son of one of them, Harry E. Kingman Jr. He recalled the crisis this way: The accreditation board came out here and said, your faculty isn’t good enough. So dad and Newsom got together and they both went to Kansas City; in fact, the two families lived in the same apartment house close together. It took about six or seven months at Kansas City Veterinary College, and then after that Newsom went to San Francisco to one of the private veterinary schools out there.

THE EDITORS John Scott Haldane (fig. 1) was not the first distinguished member of Oxford University to visit Colorado. In 1882, thirty years before him, Oscar Wills O’Flaherty Fingal Wilde, a walking advertisement for Gilbert and Sullivan’s light opera Patience, had arrived in Leadville “anxious for to shine in the high aesthetic line, as a man of culture rare” (Ellman 1987; Griswold and Griswold 1995). Dressed in a long green overcoat “befrogged and wonderfully befurred” with broad bands of otter skin, with a wide Lord Byron collar and sky blue shirt beneath his large, white, and flat face, he had astounded the Leadville miners both with his wit and with his ability to hold whiskey.
