It is to erect his own judgement into the supreme standard of right and wrong. It is to fancy himself the only wise and worthy ma in the commonwealth. (TMS 234; my enumeration) Smith said, as though it was a matter that required no real consideration, that a statesman should guide pragmatism with a 'systematical idea of the perfection of policy and law'; meaning that political pragmatism was to take its point of reference from scientific theories of economics and jurisprudence. But, once he had necessarily departed from this idea of perfection, the statesman's actions, however critical they were to the survival of the state, could not be graced with logic or reason.

Cropsey accused Smith of having helped to displace a philosophy based on unworldly ideas, with the post-enlightenment philosophy of tolerance, utility, and self-gratification. Smith, according to this story, unambiguously endorsed Hume and took the modern side of the great philosophical divide. Most Smith scholars have been less concerned with the antispiritual orientation of Smith's doctrine than with the pedigree of his ideas, but the consequences for his reputation are just as deadly. From the scholarly point of view, if it were established that Smith was an unqualified materialist and his natural religion was only skin deep, then his philosophy could only be an obscure 36 Method and Morals and derivative version of Hume's.
