The beach was proclaimed a National Surfing Reserve in 2008. Before its discovery by surfers, this was the beach for the inland town of Kempsey – the Kempsey–Crescent Head Surf Life Saving Club was established here in 1921 when a timber track made its way through the boggy swamps to reach the beach. The beach is dominated by the grassy headland after which the place is named, and an ocean-front six-hole golf course extends up to the higher, adjoining head.

Queen Victoria installed one at Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight in the 1840s and, by the 1860s, Melburnians were following suit on the shores of Port Phillip Bay. Sadly, local councils ordered the removal of many boxes from neighbouring beaches in the 1960s, but Brighton’s survived long enough for their heritage value to be recognised. Today, they can fetch high prices on the rare occasions they come on the market but, while the boxes are licensed, the beach is free to all, like every Australian beach.

The historic fishing village fronts the sheltered waters of Anderson Bay, making it an ideal family destination.
